## Northern Ireland’s Gambling Regulations Receive a Revamp
Northern Ireland is finally receiving a long-awaited overhaul of its gambling regulations. This week, the province’s legislative body introduced a new proposal that could alter the way gambling is controlled. This marks the first time in over three decades that the laws have been reviewed.
The proposal, titled the Gambling, Gaming, Lottery and Entertainment (Amendment) Bill, has already cleared its initial hurdle and must be approved by the end of the year to become official. It will make it unlawful for minors to use gambling machines and grant the government the authority to levy taxes on gambling businesses. There will also be new guidelines for those holding gambling licenses.
This proposal is merely the initial phase of a more comprehensive plan to modernize Northern Ireland’s gambling regulations. The government intends to introduce another proposal in the future that will address online gambling.
The Ministry of Communities, in a note outlining the modifications and their associated expenses, stated that the legislation intends to address certain issues related to the regulation of land-based gambling, gaming, lotteries, and entertainment. They also aim to strengthen regulations to safeguard businesses, patrons, minors, and individuals who may be susceptible to gambling issues.
Legislators will soon deliberate on the bill and cast their votes on its core principles. Following this, it is likely to be referred to a committee for more comprehensive examination. Subsequently, lawmakers will debate and vote on the specific details and any proposed amendments. If approved, the Minister must endorse it before it is presented to the Queen for her final ratification.
